YOUTH INTERVENTION PROGRAMME 2009

A series of workshops delivering for young people aged 12+ years

Week 1 (Monday 11th May 2009)

Identity - Challenging historical misconceptions and mis-education, showing the contributions Black people have made towards civilization.

‘Looking at the historical, racial, social and cultural dynamics, which effect attitudes and influence behaviour towards self and others. This session will also cover laying down a foundation of self-knowledge to allow the participants to evaluate their sense of self worth.  This will be done through a presentation of Black history displaying the general relationship between African and European civilization.  Correcting historical misrepresentation to show how “Black history” is actually world history’.

Understanding the importance for self-defining as a way to reach beyond restrictions imposed upon people by a ruling system.
§
Challenging preconceived ideas and stereotypes.
§
Outcome gaining skills and techniques to use identity as a functional tool to reach the potential of leadership.

Week 2 (Monday 18th May 2009)

Health and Welfare - Taking a wholistic approach (physical, mental and emotional) to looking at the current trends and lack of information regarding teenage lifestyles e.g. diet, male-female relationships, peer group interaction and its effects.

‘These sessions will cover developing an understanding towards sexual health and relationship building, dietary education, mental and physical well being’.

Taking community responsibility for a more healthy “community of self” - i.e. showing how the condition of self and the condition of the community are inter-related, each one affecting the other.

Week 3 (NEW DATE!: Tuesday 26th May 2009)

Goal Models & Role Models - Showing how life objectives can be set and reached without ending up in the judicial system so young people can still “get their hustle on” and remain “legit.”

‘The workshop will explore the horizon of possibilities of life goal achievements that young people wish to obtain, sociably, academically and in careers. The sessions will also reflect upon and evaluate the cause and effects of crimogenics looking at so–called gang culture, socio-historical factors and applied solutions’.

Looking at the difference and the balance needed for both model types.

Presenting the origins of “gang/gangster culture” and its impact on Hip-Hop, youth culture and politics.

Laying a foundation to understand the difference between learning and training.
§
Understanding that “knowledge is power”

Week 4

Media Breakdown - Understanding importance of mastering our emotional intelligence (film communicates primarily through our emotive responses, emotions can dictate our attitudes and our attitudes direct our actions).

‘This workshop will involve looking at the influence and power of film, T.V. and music (positive and negative) on attitudes and behaviour e.g. analysing attitudes towards women, also the influence and power of terminology, rites of passage and the direction of social attitudes and values. This will be done by exploring the history of Hip-Hop as a sub-culture and learning how to read film from a cultural perspective’.

Formulating analytical skills i.e. have an Independent Cultural Foundation (ICF) to establish a Cognitive Celluloid Conceptualisation (3 Cs). To encourage an understanding of the importance of the role film/media/music in formulating ideas/influence on society and what this can achieve.

Understanding the influence of film.
§
How to read film from a cultural perspective.
§
Demonstrate that the study of film can be used as a vehicle for a wider understanding of historical, social and cultural ideologies.

Depending on demand the courses will be divided into two sessions apt for 11-13 year olds and 14 - 18 year olds

The course will culminate with certification for those successfully completing the units.
